Main Features
Variety Arbequina
The Arbequina variety is the most commoun variety for this area of Catalonia. This variety is said to be native from Palestine and arrived in Spain thanks to the Duke of Medinacelli in the 17th century. The truth is, it is usually considered one of the best varieties in whole Spain (International Olive Council). It is a quite aromatic oil, with fruity aromas of banana and apple, due to the high percentage of polyunsaturated acids, which it usually contains. In general, arbequina oil is suitable for those who are looking for an extra virgin olive oil with a smooth flavor.
Properties
Arbequina oil, like the rest of olive oils, has a high percentage of oleic acid, which highly contributes to reduce cholesterol, while being an excellent complement to the Mediterranean diet.
Usage
It is perfect for making mayonnaise, aioli or sauces with a soft or delicate flavor. Raw is ideal for toast, tomato bread or jams. It matches perfectly with vegetable or fruit salads, . It can also be used for fish and seafood. And it is highly recommended for baking, as a substitute of butter, especially in biscuits.
